How to Measure Accurately for a Custom Shower Door

example bathroom

When you're ordering a custom shower door, accurate measurements are critical. Whether your space is a simple alcove or a more complex shape with sloping ceilings or tight corners, getting the dimensions right ensures the door is manufactured to fit perfectly the first time. Even small inaccuracies can lead to installation issues, poor sealing, or a door that simply doesn’t fit.

Before you start measuring, make sure the area is fully finished. All tiling should be complete, and your shower tray or floor base must already be in place. Use a metal tape measure for precision, and a spirit level to check that the walls and floor are straight and even. If you're measuring an awkward space, having someone with you to hold the tape can make the job easier and more reliable.

We recommend measuring in millimetres, as this allows for the most precise manufacturing. Make a note of any unusual features in the space, such as sloping ceilings, low heights, boxed-in pipework, or beams. These kinds of details can affect the final design of your shower door, so it’s important to include them from the start.

Each of our custom shower doors has its own specific measuring guide. That’s because the method for measuring our shower doors differs slightly, depending on your bespoke needs. Once you’ve chosen the door and shape you want, you’ll find a tailored measuring guide on the product page with step-by-step diagrams to help you through the process.

It’s essential that measurements are only taken once the area is completely finished and ready, as even an untiled wall can throw off the fit. If your walls aren’t square or if the space has any unusual angles, make a note of this and let us know. We can often adjust the glass design to accommodate these details, but only if we're aware of them up front. We also have a guide to give us the measurements for any out of plumb walls.

If you're ever in doubt, you’re not alone. Our team is always happy to help. If something doesn’t feel right or you’re unsure which points to measure, feel free to send us photos of the space and we’ll guide you through it.

Taking your time with the measuring process is worth it. A few extra minutes of care now can save you days of delays and avoid costly mistakes later on. Follow the measuring instructions provided with your chosen door and double-check your notes before submitting your order. With accurate measurements, your custom door will be built to fit beautifully—and installation will be fast and stress-free.
